The Asian ladybeetle is the most common insect you can find among ladybugs in Japan. The cool thing is that even though they are the same type, there are Asian ladybeetles in many different colors and patterns. It is just like everyone is wearing different clothes!

What kind of patterns are there?

The Asian ladybeetle comes in many types of patterns.

• Two-spot type: Its whole body is black with 2 red or yellow spots.
• Four-spot type: Its body is black with 4 red or yellow spots.
• Patterned type: It has a black body with red or yellow shapes on it.
• Red type: Its body is red or yellow with lots of black spots. This is the ladybug pattern that you know best. Some of them are a rare type called "plain red" with no spots at all.

Where do they live?

You can find Asian ladybeetles anywhere in Japan. You can look for them in many places like parks, fields, and grassy spots. They love plants, so you can often find them on leaves.

What do they eat?

The Asian ladybeetle loves to eat tiny bugs called aphids that suck goodness out of plants.

• They eat dozens of aphids in just one day.
• For people who work in fields or do gardening, they are helpful bugs that protect important crops.

How long is their life?

The Asian ladybeetle grows from an egg to a larva, then a pupa, and finally an adult.

• When it is a larva, it looks spiky and a little bit scary. This larva eats a lot of aphids, too!
• After it becomes an adult, it lives for about 1 year. When winter comes, they huddle together and sleep.

How to Choose Colors: Try Your Favorite Pattern!

Asian ladybeetles have so many different patterns, so pick your favorite one and color it in!

• Red and Black: This is the most famous combo. Use red as your main color and paint the black spots.
• Black and Red: Color the whole body black, then add 2 or 4 red or yellow spots near the top of its back.
• Black and Yellow: Drawing yellow spots on a black body looks super cool.
• Try Rainbow Colors: It is also fun to use your very own original color combo that real Asian ladybeetles do not have!

How to Make It Look Round: Think About Light and Shadows!

The body of an Asian ladybeetle is shiny and round. To show this, let's think about "light" and "shadows."

• Where Shadows Go: Use a color a little darker than your main color (like dark brown if you are using red) on the bottom of the body and in the dips of the wings. This makes it look round and 3D!
• Where Light Hits: Use a lighter color or leave it plain white on the highest part in the middle of its back. This makes it look like light is shining on it, so it looks even more real.

Asian ladybeetle wings are bright and shiny.

• If you use colored pencils or crayons, press down a little harder to get a smooth, shiny look.
• If you use paints, use just a little bit of water to make the paint nice and thick.
