Big Body and Long Neck! The Plant-Eating Dinosaur Camarasaurus!

Camarasaurus is a plant-eating dinosaur with a super big body and a long neck. It lived in the forest and ate lots of plants. It is one of the very first dinosaurs among the types that grew especially big.

When Did It Live?

Camarasaurus lived long ago in the Jurassic Period, about 155 million to 145 million years ago. This was a super busy time on Earth when lots of huge dinosaurs were active!

A Super Big Body!

Camarasaurus had a really huge body!

• It was about 15 to 23 meters long! That is as long as about 2 buses.
• It was about 8 meters tall. That is as tall as the 3rd floor of a building.
• It weighed about 20 to 40 tons! That is as heavy as about 5 elephants.

With a body this big, it walked slowly through the forest and ate lots of plants.

A Big Head and Spoon-like Teeth!

Compared to other long-necked plant-eating dinosaurs, Camarasaurus had a bigger head and bigger nostrils. Inside its mouth, it had many teeth shaped just like spoons! It used these spoon-like teeth to easily pull off leaves and branches to eat.

A Chunky Body!

Among the huge plant-eating dinosaurs, Camarasaurus had a slightly chunky body. Its thick and sturdy legs held up its heavy body well.

What Did It Eat?

Camarasaurus was a plant-eating dinosaur that ate all kinds of plants, like tree leaves, branches, and ferns. It used its long neck well to eat lots of plants high up and low down. Scientists think it swallowed its food whole without chewing much.

What Does the Name Camarasaurus Mean?

In English, Camarasaurus is written as "Camarasaurus". This name comes from two Greek words: "camara" and "sauros". "Camara" means "chamber with a space inside", and "sauros" means "lizard". The backbone of Camarasaurus had many hollow spaces that looked like rooms, which is how it got its name. People think these spaces made the bones lighter, helping it hold up its long neck and big body.

Camarasaurus fossils are mostly found in the United States of America in North America. Many bones have been found especially in places like Colorado and Utah, helping us learn a lot about dinosaurs!

How to Choose Colors: Pick the perfect colors for a forest giant!

Camarasaurus is a plant-eating dinosaur with a big body that walked around in the forest. So, calm colors that blend in with nature around it look great!

• Basic body colors: We recommend green (dark green, dull green, olive, etc.), brown (earthy brown, deep brown, etc.), or gray (gray with a bit of green or brown). If you combine a few of these colors, your picture will look even more real!
