The three outer parts are sepals, which protected the flower when it was a tiny bud.

What Kinds Are There?

There are so many different kinds of Lily! Mostly, you can split them into types that have grown in Japan for a long time and types that came from other countries.

• Yamayuri (Goldband Lily): A huge white Lily that grows in Japanese mountains. It smells super nice, too!
• Kanokoyuri (Showy Japanese Lily): Its petals have tiny spots called "kanoko" patterns, which look just like the spots on a baby deer's back!
• Teppouyuri (Easter Lily): A Lily with white flowers shaped like little trumpets. You often see it in late summer.
• Oriental Hybrids: Fancy, sweet-smelling Lilies with lots of different varieties. Many of the flowers you see in flower shops belong to this family!

Where Do They Bloom?

Lily plants mostly live in warm places in the Northern Hemisphere. You can find wild Lilies in Japan, China, Europe, and North America. They love to grow in sunny spots where water drains away nicely.

How Does Lily Smell?

Every kind of Lily smells a little bit different! Some smell sweet and fancy, while others smell fresh and clean. If you place a sweet-smelling Lily in your room, the whole room will fill up with a wonderful scent!
