An energetic hunter! The American Shorthair!

The American Shorthair is a cat known for its cool stripe patterns and strong, sturdy body. Long ago, it came to America on a ship, making it a cat with a very long history. It is cheerful and loves to play, so it is super popular all over the world!

Where did it come from?

Once upon a time, the ancestors of the American Shorthair were cats that rode on a ship called the "Mayflower" as it sailed from England to America. They worked hard to protect the valuable food on the ship from mice. That is why they are still great at catching mice today!

What do they look like?

The most famous pattern is the "Silver Classic Tabby," which has black stripes on silver fur. The swirl-like pattern on the side of their body looks really cool! But stripes are not the only look—there are American Shorthair cats in many colors and patterns, like white, black, brown, and cream. Their strong, muscular body and round face are super cute, too!

What kind of personality do they have?

They have a very cheerful and friendly personality. They are full of curiosity and love playing with toys! They like spending time with you, but they can also enjoy being on their own, so they are a bit independent, too. They get used to new places easily and are smart, gentle cats that can get along well with kids and other pets!

How to Choose Colors

When you think of the American Shorthair, you think of stripes! It is fun to decide what color to make your stripes.

• Silver Classic Tabby: This is the most famous pattern. Try coloring the body base in light gray or silver, and color the stripes in black or dark gray. It will look sharp and cool!
• Brown Classic Tabby: Brown stripes are popular too. Make the base light brown or cream, and color the stripes in dark brown to give it a warm feel.
• Other Colors: Of course, it is totally okay to use your favorite colors, like black patches on a white body, or orange stripes (red tabby)!
• Eyes: Green, or hazel (a mix of gold and brown) are the most common colors. Color them like shiny jewels!
• Nose and Paw Pads: Match the fur color and color them pink, black, or brick red.

How to Color Great Stripes!

• When using colored pencils: If you color the stripe lines clearly with a little extra strength, the pattern will stand out. For the base color, color gently along the flow of the fur to make it look pretty.
• When using crayons: When coloring the stripes, trace the outlines a bit darker before filling them in to make clear patterns.

How to Color a 3D Look: Think About "Shadows" and "Light"!

To make the sturdy body look nice and round, try adding "shadows". Places that get shadows are:

• Under the tummy, and where the legs meet the body
• Under the chin, and where the tail overlaps the body
• The outline of the face, and inside the ears

If you layer a color that is just a little darker than the base color in these places, you can show off muscle and roundness. If you leave the back or forehead white without coloring, or color them lightly, it looks like light is shining on them!
