Loves being held! Ragdoll, the cat that looks like a stuffed toy!

The name Ragdoll means "stuffed toy" in English. They are super calm and love to cuddle! Just like their name says, they love to be held by people. When you pick them up, they relax their whole body and go all floppy. It is so cute how they look just like a doll!

Where did they come from?

The home of the Ragdoll is the United States. About 60 years ago, in the 1960s, they were born as a new cat breed from gentle and friendly cats. They do not have a very long history yet, but they became popular all over the world because they are so cute!

What do they look like?

Their biggest feature is their fluffy, long fur that feels just like soft silk. Also, their clear blue eyes look just like sapphires and are so pretty! Their bodies are on the bigger side for cats, and they are quite sturdy. It takes about 3 to 4 years for them to grow big, so they are slow-growing and relaxed cats.

Their colors are often cream, light brown, or gray. They are famous for a pattern called "pointed," where only their face, ears, paws, and tail have a darker color. When they are born, all newborn babies have pure white fur. As they grow bigger, their patterns slowly show up. Isn't that amazing!

What is their personality like?

They are very calm and relaxed. They rarely cry in a loud voice or run all around. They like to spend quiet time near their owners. They love people almost like dogs do. They have a very sweet heart and can get along well with children and other animals, too!

How to Choose Colors

Ragdoll looks great in gentle, soft colors. Try to color while imagining its fluffy fur!

• Body base color: Use white, cream, or very light brown to give Ragdoll its signature gentle look.
• Point colors (face, ears, paws, and tail): Try using a color that is a little darker than the body. Light brown (seal) or greyish blue (blue) are famous colors. When you color around the face or the tips of the ears, try blending the colors smoothly so it looks like a real cat!
• Eyes: This is Ragdoll's best feature! Color them with a sparkling light blue or blue. If you leave a tiny white dot, the eyes will look like they are shining!
• Nose and paw pads: Color them a cute pink.

Let's Show the Fluffy, Long Fur!

Let's try to show Ragdoll's proud, soft-looking fur.

• When using colored pencils: Do not press too hard. Gently overlap long lines to make the fur look fluffy. The trick is to stroke lightly "swoosh, swoosh" along the flow of the fur!
• When using crayons: After coloring the whole cat, rub it lightly with a tissue. The colors will blend together to create a soft fur feel.

How to Make it Look 3D: Think About "Shadows" and "Light"!

Ragdoll has a big body. If you add "shadows" to show its roundness, it will look even more real! Places that become shadows are:

• Under the chin, and the very bottom of the belly
• Where the legs meet the body
• The base of the fluffy tail

For these places, try layering a slightly darker color lightly over the base color. On the other hand, for places where light hits like the back or forehead, leave them white or color them lightly to make Ragdoll look soft and plump.

Make the Background Gentle Too!

Ragdoll loves relaxing inside the room, so these things match the background very well!

• A soft rug or a comfortable cushion: Draw your favorite patterns to make a wonderful room!
• A sunny window: It is also nice to add lace curtains or color softly with yellow and orange to make it look like warm sunlight is shining through.

Tips to Enjoy Coloring!

You do not have to stick to real cat colors! Using the colors you think are cute is the best way to do it. A pink Ragdoll or a sky-blue Ragdoll would be super wonderful too!
