The Maine Coon is a very big type of cat. People even call them "Gentle Giants"! They are proud of their lion-like mane and their long, fluffy tail that looks like a raccoon's. They look wild and cool, but they are actually very kind and smart.

Where did they come from?

As the name says, people say their home is Maine in the USA. A long time ago, their ancestors were strong cats who kept farms and homes safe from mice in the very cold state of Maine. Some people say they were named "Maine Coon" because their fluffy tails looked like raccoons!

What do they look like?

Their biggest feature is their big body! They are one of the biggest kinds of cats. Big ones can even be over 1 meter long! Their long, fluffy fur keeps them safe from the cold and looks so cool. The fur around their neck is extra long, just like a lion's mane! They also have cute tufts of hair on the tips of their ears called "lynx tips".

What are they like?

They look cool and dignified, but they are very calm and gentle. They love their owners and are smart like dogs. Sometimes they answer when you call their name or bring toys to you! The nickname "Gentle Giant" fits them perfectly. Some Maine Coon cats even learn tricks like "shake hands" just like a dog!

They like playing with water?!

Most cats are scared of water, but Maine Coon cats are special because many of them like playing with water! Some scoop up water with their paws to drink it, or come to play in the bathroom. Maybe it is because they used to travel on ships long ago!

How to Choose Colors

Maine Coon cats come in all kinds of colors, like stripes, white, black, and brown. Use your imagination to color a cool Maine Coon!

• Brown Mackerel Tabby: This is the most common brown striped pattern. Color the base light brown and the stripes dark brown or black to make it look cool and wild.
• Silver Classic Tabby: This stylish color has black swirl patterns on silver. Try coloring the base light gray and the patterns black.
• Single Color: Color it all black to look powerful, all white to look magical, or orange (red) to look bright and cheerful!
• Eyes: Green, gold, or copper (reddish-orange) look very pretty. Color them to shine bright!

Let's Show Off the Long, Fluffy Fur!

Try showing the Maine Coon's famous long, gorgeous fur on your coloring page.

• Using colored pencils: Draw long, quick lines following the way the fur grows to make it look fluffy. Try drawing extra-long lines for the "mane" around the neck and the bushy tail!
• Using crayons: Layer colors on top of each other to make the fur look thick. If you color the stripes on the tail clearly, it will look super cute like a raccoon!

How to Make It Look 3D: Think About "Shadows" and "Lights"!

Adding "shadows" to show off their big body makes them look even cooler. Shadowy spots are:

• Under the belly and at the top of their strong legs
• Under the chin and where the long neck fur overlaps
• Where the fluffy tail touches the body

Color these spots lightly with a slightly darker color than your base. On the other hand, if you color the wide back and forehead lightly or leave them white, they look bright in the light and make the body look big!

Make the Background Wild Too!

Maine Coon cats originally lived out in nature. Things like these look great in the background:

• In the forest or woods: Adding tree trunks and fallen leaves makes it look cool, like an adventure.
• Snowy scenes: Maine Coon cats love cold places, so they look great with white snow!
• A room with a fireplace: Seeing their big body relaxing in front of a fireplace is nice too.
