About Clownfish

Everyone's Favorite! The Clownfish!

The Clownfish is a super cute fish with orange and white stripes. It became famous in an animated movie, so many of you might already know it!

Where Does It Live?

The Clownfish lives in warm, clean ocean coral reefs. In Japan, you can find lots of them in the seas south of Amami Oshima and around Okinawa.

Best Friends with Sea Anemones!

The coolest thing about the Clownfish is that it always stays together with a creature called a sea anemone! Sea anemones have poison, but the Clownfish has a special power to stay safe from it. So when it needs to hide from enemies, it can duck inside the sea anemone to stay safe. It helps the sea anemone too! The Clownfish cleans away trash and chases other fish away, so they help each other live. A relationship like this is called "symbiosis."

Its Swimming Style Is So Cute!

The Clownfish is really good at swimming by wiggling its body back and forth. This way of swimming is called "waddling," and it is so much fun to watch!

It Changes Gender When It Grows Up?!

The Clownfish has a very unique body. Actually, every Clownfish is born as a male. But the biggest male in the group turns into a female! Isn't that amazing?

What Does It Eat?

The Clownfish eats plankton, which are tiny creatures floating in the sea, as well as algae. Sometimes it even eats the leftovers that the sea anemone does not finish!

How to Color Clownfish

How to Choose Your Colors

Clownfish look super cute when you paint them with bright colors! The colors of the fish can be a little different depending on the picture, so you can use any colors you like!

  • Body color: Color it with a bright, shining orange! Depending on the picture, you can use a yellowish orange or a dark orange, too.
  • White stripes: Color the white parts nice and neat. If you make the edges of the stripes a little thicker with black, it will look just like a Clownfish!
  • Fins: Color the fins orange like the body, and make the very tips a little bit black to make it look real!

Let's Color the Background!

Color the sea where the Clownfish lives with lots of pretty colors, too!

  • Sea anemones: Sea anemones come in many colors like pink, purple, and yellow. Color them softly to make them look soft and fluffy!
  • Corals: Corals also come in many colors like red, orange, yellow, and green. Use your favorite colors to make a beautiful coral reef!
  • Underwater: Use light blue or sky blue to show the blue sea water and the sunlight shining in!

How to Make It Look 3D

Clownfish have round bodies, so making them look a little 3D will make them look even cuter!

  • Round body: Color the bright parts where the light hits a little lighter. Color the shadowy parts a little darker (like right next to the stripes or near the base of the fins) to show how round it is!
  • Edges of the white stripes: If you color the edges of the white stripes with light gray or light sky blue, the white parts will pop out!
