About Sheep

What Kind of Animal is the Sheep?

Sheep are in the same group of animals as cows and goats! Their bodies are covered in fluffy wool. You probably think of them peacefully eating grass on a farm. People say there are over 1,000 kinds of Sheep in the world! Depending on the kind, their wool length, face color, and whether they have horns can be very different.

In fact, very few Sheep live in Japan. A study in 2024 showed there are about 23,000 Sheep in the whole country. Almost half of them live in Hokkaido!

Look Closely at Their Eyes: Their Pupils Are Wide!

If you look closely at a Sheep's face, you will find something surprising! Their pupils are wide rectangles. That is the exact opposite of a cat's pupils, which turn into thin vertical lines.

This shape helps them look wide around themselves. Sheep can see from 270 degrees to 320 degrees around them. They can even see behind themselves without moving their heads! For animals living in grassy fields, spotting enemies quickly is super important for their lives.

Chew Grass, Bring It Back Up, and Chew Again

Sheep have 4 stomachs! They swallow grass once, bring it back up into their mouths, and chew it slowly again. This is called rumination. It is an amazing trick to digest tough grass easily.

If you see a Sheep moving its mouth over and over at a farm, it might be doing this!

Their Wool Keeps Growing, So People Cut It

Wild animals shed their fur when it grows to a certain length, right? But the wool of Sheep cared for by humans keeps growing! If people leave it alone, the wool gets heavy, and it becomes hard for the Sheep to walk.

That is why farms cut their wool in spring. This wool turns into sweaters and scarves! The sweater you wear in winter might have come from a Sheep, too.

They Can Remember 50 Friends' Faces

Sheep look quiet and gentle, but they actually have great memories! A study in the UK found that Sheep can remember the faces of 50 Sheep friends. Even better, they do not forget them for about two years. Isn't that amazing?

We also know that seeing the faces of their favorite friends helps them feel calm. Sheep can tell every friend in their herd apart!

How to Color Sheep

Leave some white spaces on the fluffy wool

When you think of Sheep, you think of bright white, fluffy wool! Instead of coloring all of it with the same color, leave some white spots here and there. This will make it look nice and fluffy.

Try gently adding cream or light beige along the edges of the wool clumps. If you leave the middle white, the wool will look puffy!

Change the color for just the face and legs to make it look real!

Many kinds of Sheep have darker faces and legs. If you color the body whitish and the face and legs brown or gray, it will look just like a real Sheep!

When you color the face, it is best not to use solid black. If you use dark brown or gray, it is easy to see the eyes and nose, and your Sheep will turn out super cute.

Pay attention to the direction of the ears and horns

The ears of a Sheep stick out to the left and right from the sides of its head. Try making the back of the ears a little darker than the front. Just doing that makes the ears look like they are sticking forward!

If you color lightly around the eyes, your Sheep will have a gentle face. Give it a try!

Try using a few different greens for the pasture

If your picture has a background, the grassy field looks prettier if you do not color it all with the same green. If you use dark green in the front and light green or yellow-green for the hills in the back, it will look like the field goes on far away!

Leave the inside of the clouds white and just trace the edges with light blue. This makes the sky feel big and wide.

It is a great idea to use slightly different wool colors for the parent Sheep and the baby Sheep. That way, you can easily tell the two apart!

Fun Facts About Sheep

Sheep have wide pupils to see all around

A Sheep's pupil is a long rectangle that stretches sideways. Thanks to this shape, they can see 270 to 320 degrees around them. This means they can see behind themselves without even moving their head! They can also rotate their eyeballs, so they keep a wide view even while bending down to eat grass. It is a great trick to stay safe from enemies in the wild fields.

Sheep have four stomachs inside their belly

Sheep are ruminants, just like cows and goats, and they have four whole stomachs. They swallow grass once, bring it back up to their mouth, and chew it gently all over again. By doing this, they get good nutrients from tough grass that humans cannot digest. When you see Sheep constantly moving their mouths at a farm, they are chewing their food for the second time!

Sheep remember 50 friends' faces for two years

In a test at a research center in Cambridge, England, scientists found that Sheep can tell apart 50 faces of their Sheep friends, as well as familiar human faces. What is amazing is that they even remembered faces after being apart for more than two years! Showing them familiar faces made them feel less worried, so we know they really recognize each friend in their herd.

There are much fewer Sheep in Japan than you think

According to data from Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, about 23,000 Sheep were kept in Japan in 2024, across about 995 farms. About 49 percent of them live in Hokkaido. Back in the 1950s, when Japan grew its own wool, there were over 900,000 Sheep. That means today's number is just a tiny fraction of what it used to be!
