About Shinkansen Series E6 Komachi
The red bullet train that runs on the Akita Shinkansen
The E6 series is a bullet train that runs as the Akita Shinkansen Series E6 Komachi, connecting Tokyo and Akita.
It made its debut in 2013. Since 2014, it has been running at a top speed of 320 km/h, which is faster than the previous trains.
Its bright red body is super popular because you can tell it is a Shinkansen Series E6 Komachi right away!
The name comes from Ono no Komachi, a famous Heian-period poet said to be from Akita Prefecture.
Red Long Nose
The front of the Shinkansen Series E6 Komachi has a long, stretched-out long nose.
Its nose is about 13 meters long. This clever design helps lower the loud noise made when it runs fast and enters a tunnel.
The driver's cab window sticks out like a bump above the nose, and the lights on both sides look like slanted eyes.
Try to find the line between the red and silver on the nose in the first coloring page.
It Runs Connected to the Hayabusa
From Tokyo to Morioka, Shinkansen Series E6 Komachi is coupled with E5 Series Hayabusa and they run together!
The red Komachi and green Hayabusa running with their noses joined together is super popular!
They split into two at Morioka Station. Hayabusa goes to Shin-Aomori, and Shinkansen Series E6 Komachi goes to Akita.
When they split, the tip of the nose pops open, and the coupler goes in and out!
3 Coloring pages
All 3 pictures show the train drawn just like the real Komachi, based on real photos.
The 1st picture shows Shinkansen Series E6 Komachi stopped at a station from a side angle. There is no background, so you can focus on coloring its long nose and body.
The 2nd picture shows it coupled with the Series E5 Hayabusa, coming around a curve. Let's compare the red Komachi in front with the green Hayabusa in the back! You can see the train set number "Z17" in the driver's cab window.
The 3rd picture shows Shinkansen Series E6 Komachi running on the conventional train tracks past Morioka. A Bullet Train is running right under the same power poles and overhead wires as a regular train!
A Shinkansen Built Strong Against Snow
Akita is a region where it snows a lot in winter.
Shinkansen Series E6 Komachi has a snowplow to push through the snow and special features to keep ice away, so it can run smoothly even in deep snow.
As for other Shinkansen, we also have a coloring page of the Hokuriku Shinkansen Series E7. If you like autumn scenery in Akita, try coloring the Autumn Leaves Viewing coloring page too!
How to Color Shinkansen Series E6 Komachi
Red and silver are the main colors
Color the roof and the top of the nose on the Shinkansen Series E6 Komachi red.
The real color is a dark red called madder red. If you layer just a little bit of purple or dark brown over the red, you will get a similar color.
Make the bottom half of the train body and the bottom of the nose silver or light gray.
Tips for making the train look shiny
When you color the red parts, leave thin white spaces here and there. That will make it look shiny with light hitting it!
Color the window glass light sky blue or dark gray, and make the lights white or light yellow.
Hayabusa is green and pink
For the E5 Series Hayabusa behind in the second picture, color the top emerald green and the bottom white. Then, put a thin pink line right along the border.
When it stands next to the red Shinkansen Series E6 Komachi, you get a super bright and colorful picture!
Tracks and overhead power lines
Color the rocks on the tracks gray or light brown, and color the rails dark brown or silver.
If you make the power line poles gray or dark gray, it will look nice and neat.
You do not have to color every single rock! Just color the whole area gray, then layer some dark colors here and there to make it look real.
Use blue sky and mountains for the third picture
Color the sky sky blue. Color the far-off mountains light blue-purple or light green.
If you make the utility poles gray and the grass along the tracks yellow-green, you will have a sunny day in Akita!
It looks pretty even if you leave the white parts of the train body uncolored.
Color the rocks on the tracks gray.
Fun Facts About Shinkansen Series E6 Komachi
A Shinkansen that runs on regular tracks, too
From Morioka to Akita, the Akita Shinkansen does not run on tracks just for bullet trains. It runs on regular train tracks instead.
A bullet train like this is called a "Mini-Shinkansen."
On the regular track sections, its top speed is about 130 kilometers per hour, and it even goes through railroad crossings!
Thinner than other Shinkansen
To fit through regular train tunnels and platforms, the body of the Shinkansen Series E6 Komachi is made thinner than other bullet trains.
Because of this, when it stops at a station, a step comes out to fill the gap between the train and the platform.
The red color is called "Akane-iro"
The red on the roof of the Shinkansen Series E6 Komachi is called "Akane-iro" (madder red), and the whitish silver on the bottom is called "Hiun White."
Around the windows, a silver called "Arrow Silver" is used.
It was designed by Kiyoyuki Okuyama, who is famous for designing sports cars!
Shinkansen Series E6 Komachi has 7 cars
The Shinkansen Series E6 Komachi travels in a set of 7 cars.
When it connects with the Hayabusa, it becomes a super long train with 17 cars (10 cars + 7 cars)!
The car numbers for the Shinkansen Series E6 Komachi follow the Hayabusa's cars 1 to 10, so they are numbered Car 11 through Car 17.
