About Katakana "Myu"

The "Myu" in "Music"

The character on this coloring page is the Katakana "Myu".
The word is "Music". It starts with "Myu"!
"Music" is the English word for ongaku.
The picture on the left shows headphones with musical notes floating all around them. It feels like you can almost hear the music!
Katakana is a kind of letter we often use for words that come from other countries, names of animals and plants, and sounds or animal noises. Both "music" and "headphones" are words that come from English.

"ミ" and a small "ュ" make 1 sound

Katakana "Myu" is a letter made by writing a small "ュ" after "ミ".
You write it with two letters, but you read it as one single sound: "ミュ". Sounds like this are called 拗音 (youon).
If you write "ュ" big to make "ミユ", it turns into two different sounds: "ミ" and "ユ". Writing it small or big changes how you read it!
Try saying "ミュージック" (music) while clapping your hands. You only need to clap your hands once for the Katakana "Myu" part.

The Kanji That Formed Katakana "Myu"

Katakana are characters made by taking a part of a kanji or using a kanji's shape.
It is said that they started long ago when monks used them to quickly write down how to read the kanji in scriptures.
"Mi" comes from the kanji "三" (three). It uses 3 lines to write, just like "三"!
The small "ュ" is just a smaller version of the big "ユ", and "ユ" comes from the kanji "由".

Tips for writing Katakana "Myu"

Katakana "Myu" takes 3 strokes for "ミ".
You draw 3 short lines, starting from the top.
Draw each line diagonally from the top left to the bottom right, and stop at the end.
If you space the 3 lines evenly and make the 3rd line a little longer, it will look really nice.
The small "ュ" is drawn in the same stroke order as the big "ユ", taking 2 strokes.
When writing horizontally, write it small in the bottom left of the box. Be careful not to make it the same size as "ミ".

How to Color Katakana "Myu"

Color the big Katakana "Myu" with 2 different colors

The big Katakana "Myu" on the top right is a letter you color inside the outline.
If you color the big "ミ" and the small "ュ" with different colors, it is easy to see that it is made of 2 letters.
If you color "ミ" in purple or blue, and small "ュ" in pink or yellow, it will look lively like music!
It is also fun to change colors for each line, like stroke 1 and stroke 2.

Make the musical notes colorful

Try coloring the headphones in your favorite color, like red or light blue, as well as black or white.
If you change the color for the round ear pads and the headband, it will look super cool!
We recommend coloring the musical notes around it like a rainbow, using red, orange, yellow, green, and blue one by one.
It is also fun to draw extra stars or hearts around the musical notes!

Tracing comes in pairs of 2

In the boxes on the bottom right, there are 4 pairs of light gray Katakana "Myu". The left box has "ミ", and the right box has a small "ュ".
Hold your pencil correctly. Trace over the gray lines slowly so you do not go outside the lines.
If you look at the vertical and horizontal center lines in the box, it is easy to see where to write and how big to make it.
Check to see if the small "ュ" fits in the bottom left of the box, too.
Every time you trace 1 pair, say "Myu" out loud. You can learn the letter and the sound together!
