About Shinkansen E2 Series

Shinkansen E2 Series running on the Tohoku Shinkansen

The Shinkansen E2 Series is a Shinkansen train made by JR East.
It made its debut in 1997. Today, it mostly runs as the "Yamabiko" and "Nasuno" trains on the Tohoku Shinkansen line.
At its fastest speed, it can run at 275 kilometers per hour.
It is a long-serving Shinkansen that has been active on the Tohoku, Hokuriku, and Joetsu Shinkansen lines for almost 30 years!

Smooth front end

The front end of the Shinkansen E2 Series has a rounded, smoothly stretched shape.
The first coloring page shows the front of the Shinkansen E2 Series stopped at a station platform, seen from an angle.
The driver's cabin window has 2 wipers on it.
You can also see lights lined up above the window.
Along the side of the train body, a straight stripe goes all the way to the tip of its nose.

Shinkansen E2 Series running on an elevated track

The second picture shows the Shinkansen E2 Series running on an elevated bridge.
Shinkansen trains often run high up on bridges or inside tunnels so they do not hit regular roads or train tracks.
Next to the tracks, you can see a long row of poles that support the overhead wires that give the train power.
Because it runs up high, you can see far across the landscape from the windows.
Try to find the woods and houses in the background, too!

Nostalgic "200 Series Colors"

The third picture shows the Shinkansen E2 Series painted in white and green.
This is a special train repaint! It uses the exact same colors as the 200 Series Shinkansen that ran in 1982, when the Tohoku and Joetsu Shinkansen lines first opened.
It started running in 2022 to celebrate 150 years of railways in Japan, and finished its regular service in 2024.
Look for the green stripe surrounding the row of windows and the green color along the bottom edge!

Compare it with other Shinkansen trains

The E5 Series and E7 Series were made after the Shinkansen E2 Series, and they have even longer front ends.
Put your coloring pages side by side to compare how the front shapes are different!

A Shinkansen built for heavy snow

The regions where the Tohoku Shinkansen runs get a lot of snow in winter.
The Shinkansen E2 Series is built to stand up to cold weather and snow, so it keeps running smoothly even in snowstorms!
The train tracks also have special features that melt snow or spray water to clear it away.
In winter, you can see the Shinkansen E2 Series zooming through beautiful, snow-white landscapes on the Tohoku Shinkansen line.

How to Color Shinkansen E2 Series

White on Top, Purple-Blue on the Bottom

The top half of the Shinkansen E2 Series body is white.
Below the stripe, down to the bottom of the body, it is painted a dark purple-blue.
Leave the white parts uncolored, and neatly color the dark blue at the bottom to make it look sharp!

A Pink Stripe in the Middle

There is a thin pink stripe running between the white and dark blue.
Here is a tip for the thin stripe: sharpen your colored pencil so you do not go outside the lines!
If you color the driver's cabin window dark gray or black, the front will look cool and sharp.

Use White and Green for the 200 Series Colors

For the third train, color the stripe along the windows and the bottom part green.
The green of the 200 series is a slightly calm, darker green.
If you leave the rest white, it will look just like the old 200 series!

Color the Scenery Around It, Too

Color the elevated bridge in the second picture gray. If you mix green, yellow, and orange for the woods, it becomes an autumn mountain!
Color the sky lightly in light blue to make the Shinkansen E2 Series stand out.

Be Careful with Color Zones on the Front Train

On the front train in the first picture, the pink stripe goes down smoothly toward the nose.
Follow the lines carefully: color white above the stripe, and dark blue below the stripe.
Do not forget that the dark blue wraps all the way around to the bottom of the nose, too!
If you color the lights above the window red or orange, it will look super cool!
