About Savanna RX-3

A Rotary Engine Car

Savanna RX-3 is a car that Mazda started selling in 1971.
It was sold in other countries under the name RX-3.
Its main feature is that it has a rotary engine inside.
In a normal engine, parts move up and down inside to make power.
But in a rotary engine, a triangular part that looks like a rice ball spins around and around to make power.
It is small and light, but it is a very powerful engine!

The Secret Behind the Name

The name "Savanna" comes from the grassy plains in hot countries.
Fast-running animals like lions and cheetahs live in the savanna.
Maybe the name was chosen because people wanted the car to run fast, just like those animals running across the wide plains!

A Huge Success in Car Races

Savanna RX-3 was a big star in car races, too!
At that time, Nissan's Skyline GT-R was winning dozens of races in a row.
In December 1971, at a race at Fuji Speedway, Savanna RX-3 beat the GT-R to win first place and stopped its winning streak!
After that, Savanna RX-3 kept winning many, many races.

Different Shapes of Savanna RX-3

Savanna RX-3 came in a 2-door coupe, a 4-door sedan, and a wagon that could carry lots of luggage.
At first, it had an engine named 10A. But in 1972, a model with a more powerful 12A engine was added, too.
In 1978, Savanna RX-3 passed the baton to its successor, the Savanna RX-7.

Two Coloring Pages

There are two coloring pages of the 1971 Savanna RX-3: the coupe and the sedan.
Both of them have four round headlights lined up in front.
The coupe has two lines running along its side, from above the front tire to the door.
The sedan has back doors, so the whole family can ride in it!
Try comparing the shapes of the two cars!
You can also check out the RX-7, which came after Savanna RX-3.
We also have a coloring page for the RX-8, another Mazda car with a rotary engine!

How to Color Savanna RX-3

Try the Real Colors

The sample cars are yellow for the coupe and dark blue for the sedan.
Bold, bright colors really suit classic cars like these!
Try coloring the two cars just like the real ones.

The Coupe's Stripes

You can see two lines running along the side of the coupe.
These lines bend above the door handle and go all the way up to the window frame.
If you color between the lines black on the yellow body, it will look super cool and sharp!
Color slowly so you do not go outside the lines.

Shiny Chrome Parts

The bumper on Savanna RX-3 is shiny chrome.
If you color the chrome silver or gray and leave a few white spots, it will look shiny and bright!
Color the front grill with the honeycomb pattern in black or dark gray, and make the frame silver.

4 Round Lights and Windows

Leave the insides of the round headlights white, and color the edges silver.
If you color all four the same way, they will look nice and matching!
Color the window glass light blue and leave slanted white lines to make it look like real glass.

Tires and Wheels

Color the tires dark gray or black.
If you color the wheels silver or black with a silver center, it will look like a cool classic car.

Display the 2 Cars Together

When you finish both coloring pages, put them side by side!
You can clearly see how the coupe and sedan have different numbers of doors and different roof shapes.
It is fun whether you color the two cars in the same colors or different colors!

Fun Facts About Savanna RX-3

An Engine with a Spinning Triangle

Inside a rotary engine, there is a rounded triangle part called a rotor.
This rotor spins round and round inside a cocoon-shaped room to make the power that moves the car.
Because it has few parts and spins smoothly, the engine sounds quiet and can rev up very high!

A Skier on the Roof

In 1971, on a racetrack, a skier was placed on the roof of a Savanna RX-3 while it was driving.
It is said that this was a test for the skier to feel how strong the wind is at high speeds.
What a surprising way to use a car!

Taking 1st to 5th Place All for Itself

In the 1975 Japan Grand Prix race, Savanna RX-3 took 1st through 5th place all for itself.
That is how strong Savanna RX-3 was in races.
Thanks to this amazing success, many people learned how great rotary engines are.

The Name Savanna Moved to RX-7

The RX-7, which came after Savanna RX-3, was sold in Japan under the name "Savanna RX-7".
The name Savanna was used up to the second-generation RX-7.
The history of rotary engine cars connects from Savanna RX-3 to RX-7, and then to RX-8!
