About CR-X

A Small and Light Sports Car

CR-X is a small sports car made by Honda.
The first model came out in 1983, and three generations were made in total.
By making the car body small and light, it could drive quickly and smoothly.
It was created as a friend to Honda's popular car, the Civic.

The Secret of the Name

The "CR" in "CR-X" is said to stand for Civic Renaissance or Car Renaissance.
Renaissance is a word that means "rebirth."
The "X" means an "unknown number" like in math, showing the hope that it would keep growing into the future.
The 3rd generation was given the name "del Sol." That means "of the sun" in Spanish.

A Cleanly Cut Back End

The 1st and 2nd generations have a shape that looks like the back of the car was cut straight down at a slant.
This shape lets air flow smoothly without making the car any longer.
It was a cool trick to help even a small car go fast.

The 3 Generations of CR-X

The 1st generation came out in 1983, and its name was "Ballade Sports CR-X."
It used light plastic for parts of the body to make it super lightweight.
The 2nd generation came out in 1987 and was named "CR-X."
In 1989, a model with a powerful engine called VTEC was added, which gives a lot of power at high speeds.
The 3rd generation was the "CR-X del Sol," which came out in 1992. It became a two-seater convertible car that you could drive with the roof off.

3 Coloring Pages

There are 3 coloring pages: the 1st generation, 2nd generation, and 3rd generation del Sol.
The 1st generation has covers like eyelids over its headlights.
The 2nd generation got smoother with rounded corners.
The 3rd generation del Sol shows the middle part of the roof removed, so you can see the seats inside.
Line up all 3 and compare how the shapes changed.
For other fast Honda cars, we also have coloring pages for the Civic Type R and the Integra Type R.

How to Color CR-X

Try the real colors

The cars used for these examples are red and silver for the first generation, red for the second generation, and green for the third generation.
CR-X also came in other colors like white and black.
First, color them in using the real colors, and then try your favorite colors too!

The first generation is two-tone

The first generation has a two-tone color with different colors on the top and bottom of the car body.
Color the part above the side line under the door in red, and the part below it in silver.
If you separate the colors neatly at the line, it will look much more like the real thing!

The roof and seats of del Sol

The third generation del Sol has the middle of its roof taken off, so you can see the seats.
Color the seats in black or dark gray.
If you color the roof pillars at the back in green to match the car body, they will look connected!

Windows and lights

If you color the windows in light blue or gray and leave diagonal white lines, they will look just like glass!
For the headlights, leave the inside white and color just the edges in light gray.
Color the turn signals next to the lights in orange.

Tires and wheels

Color the tires in dark gray or black.
The basic color for the wheels is silver.
If you color the holes in dark gray, the wheels will look 3D!

Line up all three cars and display them

When you finish coloring all three pages, line them up from oldest to newest and display them!
If you use the real colors, you can easily see how the colors changed with each generation.
It is also fun to use the same color for all three cars to compare just their shapes!

Fun Facts About CR-X

Headlights with eyelids that open

The early models of the first-generation CR-X had eyelid-like covers over the lights.
When you turned on the lights, these covers popped right up!
In 1985, they changed to regular lights without the eyelids.

The small extra window in the back

The back of the second-generation model had one more window set into a place that looked like the body panel.
From the outside, it looked like a black panel, but from the driver's seat, you could see behind you really well!
This window was called an "Extra Window."

The roof tucks away in the trunk

In the third-generation Del Sol, some cars could automatically tuck their roof away into the back trunk just by pressing a button!
This system was called "TransTop."
There was also a model where you removed the roof by hand, and that roof was made of lightweight aluminum metal.

A CR-X that worked at the racetrack

At Suzuka Circuit in Mie Prefecture, the CR-X was once used as a safety car to watch over the races.
It was a car ready to rush over right away if something happened on the track.
It was the perfect job for the small and nimble CR-X!
