Amazing Engine! The Dream Sports Car: RX-7!

RX-7 is a super cool sports car made by a Japanese company called "Mazda". It is famous for its sleek, smooth body and its "pop-up headlights" that open right up! It is a legendary car that car lovers all over the world still adore today.

The Biggest Secret is the "Rotary Engine"!

The main thing that makes RX-7 different from other cars is its special engine called a "rotary engine." Normal engines make power by moving parts up and down inside a square box. But in a rotary engine, a triangle-shaped "rotor" that looks like a rice ball spins around and around inside to make power. That makes it smaller and lighter than a normal engine, but super powerful! Its unique "Vroom!" engine sound is super cool, too.

The Different Generations of RX-7!

RX-7 changed its look three big times over its long history. Each model is popular and has its own fans!

• 1st Gen: Savanna RX-7 (SA22C): This is the very first RX-7 that came out in 1978. It was light and had a slim, sharp design like a knife. It was super fun to drive and did great in car races!
• 2nd Gen: Savanna RX-7 (FC3S): The second model came out in 1985. It was a bit bigger and more powerful than the first one. It had a boxy design that looked strong. This car was also super popular in races and in cool "drifting" sports where cars slide around turns!
• 3rd Gen: Efini RX-7 / Mazda RX-7 (FD3S): The third model came out in 1991. It had a smooth, curvy design that looked like a car from the future! It was the most powerful RX-7 ever made. Because it was so fast and pretty, it showed up in lots of movies and video games. It really is a "dream sports car"!

After RX-7, a cool sports car called "RX-8" came out! It stopped using pop-up headlights and had room for four people. It was upgraded so even more people could enjoy riding in it!

How to Choose Your Colors

The RX-7 is a sports car, so bright and cool colors look great on it! Use your favorite colors to get your very own RX-7 ready to race!

• Body Color: The most famous colors are fiery red and lightning-fast yellow. Other popular colors are black, which blends into the night, and shiny white. Metallic silver and deep blue look super cool, too!
• Wheels: The wheels make the car look strong. Classic colors are silver, gunmetal (dark gray), and black. Gold wheels make it look fancy, just like a real race car!

Make the Body Look Shiny!

Sports cars look super cool when they are polished and shiny. Let's make it look like light is bouncing off the car!

• Using colored pencils: Leave a little bit of white space on the top or rounded parts of the body, or gently rub it with an eraser. This makes it look like bright light reflecting off the car. This is called a highlight!
• Using crayons: Color lightly with a white crayon first. Then, color over it with your favorite color to make it look smooth and shiny!

How to Make it Look 3D: Think About Shadows and Lights!

Cars are made of metal. Adding dark shadows makes your car look hard and 3D! Here is where shadows go:

• Inside the wheel arches (the curved spots right above the tires)
• Under the bumpers and the doors
• The shadow cast by the car on the ground

Color these spots with a color slightly darker than the body, or use black or gray. This will make your car pop right off the page! On spots that catch the light, like the roof or the middle of the hood, use bright colors.

Add a Background and Tell a Story!

Where is your RX-7 driving? Imagine a cool place and draw it!

• Racetrack: If it is on a racetrack, draw the track and the crowd in the stands! You can draw other colorful cars next to it, too.
