About Cosmos
Cars with a Rotary Engine
Cosmos is a car that Mazda used to make.
It came out in 1967, and they made four generations of it until 1996.
Cosmos has a very special engine called a rotary engine inside it.
Mazda’s history of rotary engine cars all started with Cosmos!
How a Rotary Engine Works
In a regular engine, parts move up and down inside tubes to make spinning power.
In a rotary engine, a triangle-shaped part like a rice ball spins around inside a peanut-shaped room to make power!
This triangle part is called a rotor.
It has fewer parts, so it is small and light, but it is still super strong!
The name "Cosmos" comes from the word that means "space."
Mazda gave it this name because they wanted to make a new kind of engine car that was perfect for the space age.
The World's First Cosmos Sport
The first generation was the Cosmos Sport that came out in 1967.
It had a rotary engine with two rotors side by side. It is said to be the very first mass-produced car in the world with this kind of engine!
It looks low and flat, just like a spaceship, doesn't it?
They only made 1,176 cars, so it is a super rare car today!
The 2nd and 3rd Generations Changed Shapes
The second generation was the Cosmos AP that came out in 1975.
It was a big, sturdy coupe with a large front grille and four round headlights.
The third generation came out in 1981, and its name became just "Cosmos."
There were 2-door and 4-door models. The 2-door car had pop-up headlights that could hide away!
In 1982, a model came out with a turbo on its rotary engine to push in extra air and make it even stronger.
The Eunos Cosmos with 3 Rotors
The fourth generation was the Eunos Cosmos that came out in 1990.
One model had a rotary engine with three rotors side by side. It was the world's first regular car you could buy with a 3-rotor engine!
It is also said to be the world's first car with a car navigation system that used satellite signals to show where you were.
It was a smooth and sleek 2-door coupe for adults.

How to Color Cosmos
Copy the Real Colors
The real model cars are white for the first Cosmos Sport, red for the second-generation Cosmos AP, white for the third-generation sedan, and silver for the Eunos Cosmos.
For the Cosmos Sport, we looked at the white car on display at the Mazda Museum in Hiroshima.
Try coloring your favorite generation in its real colors!
How to Color White and Silver Cars
For the white cars, leave most of the paper white.
If you color just the bottom of the car and around the tires with light gray, it will look 3D!
For the silver Eunos Cosmos, color the whole car with a light coat of gray, but leave a few white spots on the hood and roof to make it shine.
Make the Chrome Shiny
The Cosmos Sport and Cosmos AP have shiny chrome on their bumpers and around their lights.
Color the chrome with silver or gray, and leave a few white spots so it looks like it is shining.
For the Cosmos AP's striped front grille, color the gaps with dark gray or black to make it pop!
Try coloring the mirrors on the sides of the hood in chrome colors, too.
Windows and Lights
Color the window glass with light blue or gray, and leave diagonal white lines to make it look like real glass.
For the headlights, leave the inside white and color just the edges with light gray.
It is fun to make the small lights on the second- and third-generation bumpers orange!
Tires and Wheels
Color the tires dark gray or black.
Silver is the best color for the wheels.
The Cosmos Sport wheels have a row of round holes, so coloring inside the holes with dark gray makes them look 3D.
Try coloring the gaps between the five spokes on the Eunos Cosmos with a dark color, too!
Fun Facts About Cosmos
Finishing an 84-Hour Race
In 1968, Cosmos Sport entered an 84-hour race at a racetrack called Nürburgring in Germany.
It kept running for 3 and a half whole days and finished in 4th place overall!
It showed the world that the rotary engine doesn't break easily, even after driving for a long time.
Appeared in a TV Hero Show
Cosmo Sport appeared in the 1971 TV show "Return of Ultraman" as the car for the team fighting monsters.
Its spaceship-like shape was perfect for a hero show.
People say that many adults still remember the show when they see this car today.
The Secret Behind the Name
The "AP" in the 2nd generation stands for "Anti-Pollution".
This means "reducing dirt and pollution."
It showed that the car made its exhaust gas cleaner than before.
Only the 3rd generation was named just "Cosmos" without anything added at the end.
The Secret of the 3 Rotors
The 3-rotor engine of Eunos Cosmos was super powerful.
On the other hand, people say it used up a lot of gas.
