About Sugar beet

Sugar beet Convertible

The Sugar beet is a two-seater convertible made by Honda.
It came out in 1991 and was sold until 1996.
Its size is the same as a mini-car with a yellow license plate.
Even though it is a small car, when you fold down the fabric roof, it becomes a convertible where you can see the sky!
It is a super fun car that you can drive while feeling the breeze.

The Engine is Behind the Seats

In a normal car, the engine is inside the hood at the front.
But the Sugar beet has its engine right behind the seats.
A car like this is called a mid-engine car.
Because the heavy engine is near the middle of the car, it has great balance and can turn around curves smoothly.
The engine was small at 660cc, but it was made to spin powerfully up to very high speeds.
It is a real sports car that drives by sending engine power to the back tires.

The Car Honda's Founder Saw Off

Soichiro Honda, who founded Honda, came to the Sugar beet launch event in May 1991.
Then, he passed away in August of that same year.
That is why people say the Sugar beet was the last car Mr. Honda got to see.
Even now, long after it stopped being made, many people still cherish and drive their Sugar beet.

Sugar beet's Friends

Around the same time, other companies released small sports cars, too.
Three cars—Mazda's AZ-1, Honda's Sugar beet, and Suzuki's Cappuccino—were called the "Heisei ABC Trio" using their first letters.
It was a time when people tried to make cars that were super fun to drive, even if they were small!

Two coloring pages

There are two coloring pages of a red Sugar beet with its roof folded down.
The first page shows it from the front-left angle. You can clearly see the seats and the steering wheel.
The second page shows it from the front-right angle, and it has a luggage rack on the back for carrying things.
The Sugar beet has a very small space for bags, so a rack like this comes in real handy.
The S660 is said to be the next generation of the Sugar beet.
There is also a coloring page for the NSX, another mid-engine car from Honda!

How to Color Sugar beet

Let's copy the real colors

The most famous color for the Sugar beet is bright red.
There were also yellow and silver cars, plus special limited-edition green and blue ones too.
Both coloring pages show a red Sugar beet, so try painting them red first.

Tips for coloring the red body nicely

When you color wide spots like the hood or doors red, press gently and move your crayon in the same direction to keep it smooth.
If you color the middle of the hood a bit light, and the edges and bottom a bit dark, it will look nice and rounded.
Leave the shiny spots white where the light hits, and your car will look super shiny!

The seats and the roof

Since the roof is open, you can see the seats and the steering wheel really well.
If you color the seats black or dark gray, the red car body will really stand out.
Try coloring the folded cloth roof in the back black too.

The windshield and lights

Color the front windshield light blue and leave slant white lines to make it look just like real glass.
Leave the inside of the headlights white, and just color the edges light gray.
Color the turn signals next to the lights orange.

The tires, wheels, and luggage rack

Color the tires dark gray or black.
The wheels are usually silver. If you color the round holes dark gray, they will look 3D!
If you color the luggage rack on the second page silver, it will look like real metal.

Show off your two cars together

When you finish both pages, try putting them side by side so they face each other.
It is also fun to make one car red and the other yellow or silver!

Fun Facts About Sugar beet

Front and back tires are different sizes

On Sugar beet, the back tires are bigger than the front tires.
It has 13-inch tires in the front and 14-inch tires in the back.
The engine is in the back, so this design helps the back tires push hard against the ground as you drive.

First-ever features for a mini car

Sugar beet had disc brakes on all 4 tires.
This was the first time ever for a mini car.
People also say it was the first mini car to get airbags to protect your body during a crash.

Turn the steering wheel with your own strength

Most cars today have a system that helps you turn the steering wheel easily.
But Sugar beet did not have that system.
The car was so light that you could still drive it without it.

Guinness World Record

In 2010, 569 Sugar beet cars gathered at a race track in Tochigi Prefecture and drove in a line.
This was recognized as a Guinness World Record for the biggest parade of the same car model.
It shows how much people still love Sugar beet today.
