About Toyota Previa

Egg-shaped Minivan

Toyota Previa is a minivan made by Toyota.
A minivan is a tall car with lots of space inside, so many people can ride in it.
Toyota Previa has three rows of seats and can carry seven or eight people.
Its main feature is its round, egg-like shape that goes smoothly from front to back.
When the first model came out, it was advertised as the "Genius Egg," and it became a big hot topic.
The first model appeared in 1990, and they made up to the third generation.

Secrets of the Name

The name Toyota Previa is said to come from the English word "estimable."
It means "worthy of respect" or "wonderful."
Outside of Japan, it was sold under the name "Previa" in some countries.
In places like Australia, it was named "Tarago."
It is fun that the same car has different names depending on the country!

A Rare Design with a Tilted Engine

The first Toyota Previa had its engine tilted sideways at 75 degrees and placed right under the floor beneath the seats.
Because the engine was near the middle of the car, this layout is called a mid-engine setup.
By doing this, they made the floor inside flat and kept the front part of the car short.
From the second generation, they moved the engine to the hood at the front and changed it to drive the front wheels.
Then in 2001, the Toyota Previa Hybrid came out, running on both an engine and a motor.
It was the very first hybrid minivan ever sold.

Three Generations of Toyota Previa

The first generation appeared in 1990.
In 1992, narrower models named Emina and Lucida joined the family.
The second generation came out in 2000. Since the engine moved, the hood became a little longer.
The third generation arrived in 2006. That same year, a new type of hybrid model also came out.
The third generation was made for a long time until production ended in 2019.

Three Coloring Pages

There are three coloring pages showing the first to third generations of Toyota Previa.
On the first page (1st gen), look out for the big windows and the grill with lined-up side stripes. There are also many side lines near the bottom of the doors.
On the second page (2nd gen), it has long, narrow headlights slanted up at the ends, and a small grill. The tires have patterned wheel covers.
On the third page (3rd gen), the front has a cool V-shaped point in the middle and sharp headlights. The wheels have thick, twisted spokes.
If you line up all three pages, you can see how the hood gets clearer and the front looks sharper over time.
For other Toyota minivans, we also have coloring pages for the Alphard and the Voxy!

How to Color Toyota Previa

Copy the Real Colors!

The sample models for the Toyota Previa are white for the 1st generation, white for the 2nd generation, and bright light blue for the 3rd generation.
The 1st generation is a two-tone car. The top half is white, and the bottom half is gray.
Try coloring the bumpers and the side panel lines below the doors in gray.
Of course, you can color it any color you like! Egg-shaped cars look cute in any color.

How to Color the Round Body

The Toyota Previa has few sharp corners and lots of round, curvy surfaces.
To make the rounded surfaces look nice and full, move your colored pencil along the curves of the body.
For the white cars, use the white of the paper! Color just the bottom of the body and around the tires with light gray to make it look 3D.
For the light blue 3rd generation, leave a little bit of white on the hood and roof to make it look shiny!

Windows and Lights

The 1st generation has a huge windshield and windows all around the sides.
Color the windows with light blue or gray, and leave diagonal white lines to make them look like real glass.
You can see round lenses inside the headlights on the 2nd and 3rd generations. Leave the inside white and color just the edges with light gray.
The side mirrors on the 3rd generation have tiny turn signals on them!

Tires and Wheels

Color the tires dark gray or black.
The wheels are usually silver.
If you color the triangle holes on the 1st generation wheels, or the spaces between the thick spokes on the 3rd generation with dark gray, the wheel shapes will stand out clearly.
Sharpen your colored pencil to color the small parts slowly and carefully!

Fun Facts About Toyota Previa

A car where you cannot see the engine

The first-generation Toyota Previa had its engine tilted 75 degrees to the side and tucked right under the seats inside the floor.
So, even if you opened the front of the car, you would not find a big engine like in normal cars.
Laying the engine flat made it possible to create a flat floor inside the car.
If you compare the coloring page for the first and second generations, you can see how the front shape is different!

The very first hybrid minivan

The Toyota Previa Hybrid that came out in 2001 drives using both an engine and an electric motor.
It was the very first hybrid car ever sold as a minivan.
It was designed with clever ideas so it could drive using less gas!

Different names in different countries

Toyota Previa was sold outside Japan, too.
It was called "Previa" in America, Europe, and Asia, and "Tarago" in places like Australia.
The same egg-shaped car was driving around in faraway countries!

The Genius Egg

The first Toyota Previa was advertised with the phrase "Genius Egg."
That is because it had a cool new shape and clever design that no other minivan had before!
