History of the Limited Express Odoriko
Trains with the name Limited Express Odoriko first started running way back in 1981. At first, trains with a white body and green diagonal stripes (the 185 series) and trains with a cream body and red lines (the 183 series) were active for many years. These trains carried lots of people to Izu. As time went on, new trains appeared. Today, even cooler and more comfortable trains run as the Limited Express Odoriko.
What Types Are There?
There are several types of the Limited Express Odoriko, both past and present.
- E257 Series: A train with a white body and bluish patterns. It can carry many people and is the main Limited Express Odoriko running today.
- Saphir Limited Express Odoriko (E261 Series): A extra special Limited Express Odoriko. "Saphir" is a beautiful blue color like a sapphire gemstone, and it is very fancy. Every seat is a comfortable "Green Car" seat, and it even has a car that looks like a restaurant.
- Super View Limited Express Odoriko (251 Series): This train retired in 2020, but it was very popular! It was famous for its big windows and high seats that felt like a two-story building with great views. The front had a unique shape, and it even had a play area for kids.
Where Does It Run?
The Limited Express Odoriko leaves from places like Tokyo Station and Shinjuku Station, and runs along the Tokaido Main Line. On the way, there are spots where you can see the beautiful ocean. The view of the sea from the train window is super pretty! Then, it takes everyone to hot springs and fun places in Izu, like Atami, Ito, Shuzenji, and Shimoda.
What Does "Odoriko" Mean?
The name "Odoriko" comes from a famous novel set in Izu called "The Dancing Girl of Izu" ("Izu no Odoriko"). This name was chosen after asking many people for their ideas!
How to Color Limited Express Odoriko
How to Choose Your Colors
There are different types of "Odoriko" trains, so choose your colors based on which Limited Express Odoriko you want to color!
- Series E257 (The Current Odoriko): The body is mostly pure white. Try adding dark blue and light blue lines to it. If you color the windows and roof gray or black, it will look just like the real thing!
- Saphir Odoriko: Just like its name, try coloring it with a dark blue or shiny blue like a sapphire! It looks super cool if you make the whole body look shiny.
- Super View Odoriko (A popular retired train): This train uses a light sky blue, white, and dark gray that make you think of the sky and sea. The secret is to neatly color its big windows. Its futuristic design is so cool!
- Series 185 (The Classic Odoriko): This cute retro train is mostly a cream-colored white. Its main feature is the diagonal green stripes!
- Series 183 (The Odoriko with JNR colors): This train features a cream-colored body with red lines.
Tips for Making It Look Cool!
- Draw straight lines: Trains have many straight lines, so take your time and color carefully along the lines. If you try not to go outside the lines, your picture will look beautiful!
- Try coloring the windows: The Super View Odoriko has especially big windows! It is fun to imagine people sitting inside by coloring them a little dark, or adding different colors for the curtains.
- Use light and shadows: If you make the top of the train (the roof) bright where the light hits it, and the bottom (near the wheels) darker with shadows, it will look 3D! Leaving some white spots to make the body look shiny is a great idea, too.
Try Drawing a Background!
Your picture will look even better if you draw the scenery where the Limited Express Odoriko is running!
- Next to the sea: The Limited Express Odoriko runs near the ocean, so try drawing a sparkling blue sea. You can even add white waves!
- In the mountains: There are many mountains in Izu, so try drawing green mountains and trees. If it is fall, making the mountains red and yellow will look pretty, too!
- In the city: Drawing a station platform or buildings in the city is fun, too!
Make Your Very Own Odoriko!
It is super fun to use your favorite colors, even if they are not the real ones! Use your imagination to make your very own special train run, like a rainbow Limited Express Odoriko or one with cool patterns!
