Chameleon is a very strange creature that can change its body color to match the colors around it. It is just like a ninja! It is a kind of lizard and is great at living up in trees. It eats insects, small lizards, and baby birds.

Many kinds of Chameleon

There are many kinds of Chameleon. Each one has a different size, shape, and color. Here are a few famous ones!

• Panther Chameleon: This colorful Chameleon is as pretty as a rainbow! Its body color can be red, blue, or green depending on where it lives. It is about 30cm to 50cm long.
• Veiled Chameleon: This one is special because it has a big crest on its head that looks like an old Japanese hat called an Eboshi. It lives in dry places, so it often eats leaves and fruits to get water. It is about 30cm to 60cm long.
• Jackson's Chameleon: It has 3 horns on its face, just like a small Triceratops dinosaur! (Mainly the boys have horns.) Male Chameleons sometimes use these horns to fight each other. It is about 20cm to 35cm long.
• Leaf Chameleon: This tiny Chameleon is about 6cm to 9cm long. It is so small it can sit right on your finger! Its body is brownish and looks just like a dry leaf. It hides on the forest floor to stay safe from enemies.

Why does it change color?

Chameleon changes color to hide in trees and leaves so enemies cannot find it. But that is not all! It actually changes color to share its feelings too. When it is surprised, happy, or angry, it tells its friends by changing its body color. When it wants to warm up in the sun, it can turn dark to catch heat easily.

It has amazing eyes!

Chameleon can move its right and left eyes separately! It can do clever tricks like looking forward with its right eye while looking backward with its left eye. So, even without moving its body, it can look 360 degrees all around. This helps it find enemies and food right away.

A super long tongue!

Chameleon has a very long tongue that can stretch 1.5 to 2 times longer than its own body! It shoots its tongue out fast like a rocket to catch far-away insects by sticking to them. They say it is so fast your eyes cannot even follow it!

Great at climbing trees!

Chameleon's toes split into inside and outside parts, just like a pair of pliers. On its front feet, there are 3 toes inside and 2 outside. On its back feet, it is the opposite, with 2 inside and 3 outside. These special feet help it grab tree branches tightly. Its tail is also very clever. It can curl its tail around a branch to hold its body up. By the way, Pascal the Chameleon in Disney's movie "Tangled" curls his tail outward, but real Chameleons curl their tails inward!

Where does it live?

Chameleon mostly lives in warm places like Africa, Madagascar, southern Europe, and Asia. It usually hides among the leaves up in forest trees.

How to Choose Your Colors

Chameleon is a master of disguise, so you can color Chameleon any way you like! Try to imagine what kind of colorful Chameleon you want to make.

• Base body color: If Chameleon is in the forest, try using green or brown to make it look real. But if it is your very own special Chameleon, making it rainbow-colored, or giving it polka dots or stripes is super fun too!
• Pattern colors: Chameleon has many different patterns. Use bright colors like yellow, blue, red, and orange to draw wonderful patterns.
• Belly color: Color the belly a little lighter than the rest of the body. This makes Chameleon look 3D!
• Eyes: Color the eyes round with black or yellow. It looks great if you color the eyelids the same color as the body.

• Using colored pencils: Draw short overlapping lines or add little dots. This shows the feel of Chameleon's skin really well!

How to Make Chameleon Look 3D: Think About "Shadows" and "Light"!
