The Longest Venomous Snake in the World! King Cobra!

The King Cobra is a reptile, and it is the longest venomous snake in the world. They are 3 to 4 meters long, and big ones can even grow to more than 5 meters! That is almost as long as a bus. Just like their name says, they are the king of snakes.

Where Do They Live?

The King Cobra lives in mountain forests in India and Southeast Asia. They climb trees and hide in damp places or under fallen leaves.

A Big Hood and a Threat Pose!

The King Cobra’s most famous feature is its "hood." When they get angry or surprised, they spread the skin on their neck to make it look big. When they open their hood and raise their body high up, they look super big and strong. This pose is a sign that says, "Don't come any closer!" They can even move slowly while staying in this pose.

What Do They Eat?

Guess what? The King Cobra loves to eat other snakes! They can even eat poisonous snakes without any problem. They also eat other reptiles, like lizards. They might have gotten the name "King" because they are snakes that eat other snakes!

They Have Strong Venom, but Are They Gentle?

The King Cobra has very strong venom. This venom is a type called "neurotoxin," which stops your body from moving if you get bitten. But King Cobras rarely attack humans first, and they usually try to run away. If you get too close or go near their nest, they will threaten you to protect themselves. So if you see one, make sure you do not go near it.

They Build Nests Even Though They Are Snakes!

Unlike most other snakes, the King Cobra gathers fallen leaves and twigs to build a nest. After the female King Cobra lays her eggs, she rests her body on top of them to keep them safe. She stays right by the nest and guards her eggs until the baby snakes hatch.

Baby Snakes Have Venom, Too!

Baby King Cobras are small when they are born, but they have venom just as strong as their mom and dad right from the start. But the parent King Cobras leave the nest as soon as the babies are born. They might leave instinctively so they don't eat their own babies when they get hungry!

How to Choose Your Colors

King Cobra lives in the forest, so try coloring it using colors you see in nature. You can pick colors that look super strong, or colors that help it hide really well!

• Main Body Colors: Green (like dark green or olive green), brown (like dark brown or tan), and yellowish-brown look great on King Cobra. Sometimes, there are even almost black King Cobra snakes, too!
• Patterns: King Cobra often has line or band patterns on its body. Use a color that is a little lighter (like yellow or cream) or a little darker (like dark green or black) than the body to make cool patterns!
• Belly Color: Color the belly a little lighter than the rest of the body (like white, cream, or light gray) to make it look real.
• Eyes: Making the sharp eyes yellow or gold will make them look shiny! Leaving the pupils black is totally okay.
• Tongue: Color the tongue a little bit red or pink to bring it to life!
• Inside the Hood: The inside of the hood that shows when it spreads out can be the same color as the body. Or, you can use a different color (like a bright color or orange) to make it fun!

Make It Look Sharp and Strong!

King Cobra's body is covered in scales. In this picture, the lines might show where the scales go. If you color along these lines, you can make your snake look real, shiny, and super strong!

• If you use colored pencils: Press hard to make some parts dark, and press lightly for soft parts. This makes your picture pop out and look powerful!
• If you use crayons: Try layering your colors a little bit to give the body a shiny look!

How to Make It Pop: Think About "Shadows" and "Lights"!

King Cobra slithers on the ground and climbs up trees. Imagine where the sunlight hits and where the shadows fall! Places that get shadows are:

• The bottom of the body and under the hood
• Under the jaw and inside the mouth
• The inside parts where the body curves and bends
• For parts like the back and sides that get lots of light, leave them a bit lighter or use a soft color. This will make your picture look 3D!

Color the Forest Background!

• Plants: King Cobra lives in the forest, so there might be lots of leaves, trees, and grass! Use many different greens (like light green, dark green, and yellow-green) to make a big, rich forest.
• Dirt and Fallen Leaves: Color the ground brown or dark brown to make it look like a real forest. Mixing in orange and yellow for fallen leaves looks super cool, too!
• Sunlight: If light shines through the trees, you can draw soft light beams with light yellow or cream!
