History of the Bessho Line

The Bessho Line is a train with a very long history, born in 1921. It started under the name "Ueda Onsen Denki" and has been carrying many people for over 100 years. Trains of many different shapes have run through the ages, and it is still super popular with local people and visitors today!

Popular Trains

The Bessho Line has many trains that look very unique and cool!

• Marumadori-mu Go: This train is modeled after the old "Marumado Densha" (Round Window Train). Its special feature is the cute round windows designed into the passenger car windows!
• Sanadadori-mu Go: This red train is inspired by the Sanada clan, famous warlords linked to Ueda. It features the Sanada family crest, the "Rokumonsei" (six coins), and looks very powerful!
• Shizen to Tomodachi Go: Designed with Shinshu's rich nature and cute animals, this train is fun just to look at!
• Marumado Densha (Moha 5250): This is a legendary train that was active in the past. The windows next to the doors are cut out in neat circles. It is kept with great care today at places like Bessho-Onsen Station!

Things to See on the Bessho Line

Here are some great spots you should look out for when you ride or watch the Bessho Line!

• Red Chikuma River Bridge: A cool, bright red iron bridge over the big Chikuma River, which you cross right after leaving Ueda Station. The train crossing the red bridge looks as pretty as a painting!
• Retro Station Buildings: The last stop, Bessho-Onsen Station, and Yagisawa Station along the way have retro, mint-blue wooden buildings. They make you feel like you traveled back in time!

How to Choose Your Colors

What is the legendary "Marumado Train"?

A train called "Moha 5250" that used to run in the past had rare, round oval windows next to its doors, and people fondly called it the "Marumado Train." Today's "Marumadream" brings back those cute, retro round windows on a modern train!

The "Red Bridge" brought back to life by everyone's love

In 2019, a big typhoon broke the famous "Red Bridge (Chikumagawa Bridge)" over the Chikuma River. But people all over Japan gave lots of support and donations, saying, "Let's bring back the Bessho Line!" Thanks to them, it made a wonderful comeback about a year and a half later!

A design with the spirit of "Sanada Yukimura"

The six round coin marks on "Sanada Dream" are the "Rokumonsen," used by the Sanada samurai family long ago. Its bright red design looks just like Sanada's famous red armor, and it is full of strong power!
