About Shinkansen Series 700

Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen Series 700

Shinkansen Series 700 is a bullet train made together by JR Central and JR West.
It debuted in 1999 and ran on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen lines from Tokyo all the way to Hakata.
It carried many people as the "Nozomi" and "Hikari" trains.
Today's N700 Series was built based on this Shinkansen Series 700.

A Face Like a Platypus

The front of Shinkansen Series 700 is flat and wide, shaped just like a platypus bill.
This shape is called the "Aero Stream."
Computers designed this shape to lower the wind power when running and reduce the noise made when entering tunnels.
The third coloring page shows Shinkansen Series 700 from the front as it comes into the station.
Two long lights sit side-by-side above its flat nose.

Sanyo Shinkansen's "Hikari Rail Star"

The first page shows the Shinkansen Series 700 called the "Hikari Rail Star."
JR West started running this 8-car train in 2000 as a "Hikari" train on the Sanyo Shinkansen line.
It was popular for its roomy seats and relaxing rides.
Today, it mostly runs as the "Kodama" train, which stops at every station.

Shinkansen Series 700 Running Along Lake Hamana

The second page is a picture of Shinkansen Series 700 running near Lake Hamana in Shizuoka Prefecture.
The Tokaido Shinkansen runs right along the water near Lake Hamana.
You can see the wide lake outside the windows.
Try looking for the fences beside the tracks and the poles holding up the power lines, too!

Retired from the Tokaido Shinkansen

Shinkansen Series 700 retired from the Tokaido Shinkansen line in 2020.
The pictures on the second and third pages show Shinkansen Series 700 back when it ran on the Tokaido Shinkansen.
Doctor Yellow and the 800 Series Tsubame were also built based on the design of Shinkansen Series 700.

Carrying Lots of People with 16 Cars

The Tokaido Shinkansen Series 700 was a long train made of 16 cars.
So many people ride between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka, so the train was made long to carry lots of people at once.
In the second picture, you can see the cars stretched out all the way to the back.
Notice how the cars in the back look smaller the farther away they get!

How to Color Shinkansen Series 700

The Shinkansen Series 700 on the Tokaido line is white with blue stripes

The second and third Shinkansen Series 700 have a trademark white body with a blue stripe under the windows.
Leave the white parts uncolored, and try to color just the blue stripe carefully.
The secret is to color along the straight line without going outside it.

Rail Star is gray and yellow

For the first Hikari Rail Star, the body is light gray with a yellow stripe.
The area around the cockpit windows is a dark blackish color, so if you color it dark gray, the front of the Shinkansen Series 700 will look really sharp!
If you color the lights yellow or orange, they will look like they are turned on!

Change how dark your light blue is for the lake and the sky

For the second page, let's color Lake Hamana blue and the sky light blue.
If you leave the wave lines on the lake white, the water will look nice and sparkly!
We recommend yellow-green for the grass on the bank, and dark brown for the railroad ties.

Color the town in light colors

Color the buildings and pillars on the 3rd page lightly with light gray or cream color.
If you make the background light, Shinkansen Series 700 in the middle will really stand out!

For the front view, make both sides match

The third picture shows the front, and both sides are almost the same shape.
If you use the same color and shade for the lights and windows on both sides, it will look super neat!
Try coloring under the nose a little darker gray to make the flat nose pop out.

Fun Facts About Shinkansen Series 700

"Platypus" is a Fun Nickname

The front part of the Shinkansen Series 700 is officially called the "Aero Stream" shape.
It looks just like a platypus bill! Because of this, train fans and kids lovingly call it the "Platypus."

The Rail Star's "Silence Car"

The Hikari Rail Star used to have a super quiet car with fewer announcements.
It was a thoughtful feature for people who wanted to relax and rest!

Saying Goodbye to the Hikari Rail Star

JR West announced plans to replace some Hikari Rail Star trains with new models between fiscal year 2026 and fiscal year 2028.
You might only have a little time left to see them zooming by!

Better and More Comfortable Rides

The Shinkansen Series 700 was built to be quieter and smoother than older bullet trains.
It gave people more legroom, making long trips much less tiring.
These cool ideas are still used in today's bullet trains too!
