About Doctor Yellow
The Yellow Shinkansen That Brings Happiness! Doctor Yellow
Doctor Yellow is a special Shinkansen that checks the train tracks, power lines, and signals for any problems while running. Its official name is the "Shinkansen Electrical and Track Inspection Car." It runs at night when regular Shinkansen are not carrying passengers, or during breaks in the day. It is the "Shinkansen doctor" that keeps everyone safe when riding the Shinkansen!
Types of Doctor Yellow
There are different types of Doctor Yellow based on the Shinkansen model they were built from. They have evolved over time to do higher-tech checks!
- Class 922: This Doctor Yellow was based on the old "0 Series" Shinkansen. It had a round nose and a cute shape.
- Class 923 (Subclass 0, Set T4): This Doctor Yellow retired in January 2025. It was based on the "700 Series" Shinkansen and could do inspections while running at a top speed of 270 km/h.
- Class 923 (Subclass 3000, Set T5): This is the Doctor Yellow running today. It belongs to JR West. It looks almost the same as Subclass 0, but some parts like its jack-up spots are a little different.
Doctor Yellow Secrets
Doctor Yellow has almost no seats inside. Instead, it is packed with lots of computers and measuring tools!
- Checking with Lasers: While running, it shines lasers on the ground to check if the tracks are off by even a millimeter.
- Observation Domes: It has small windows called "observation domes" on the roof. From there, cameras and human eyes check if the pantograph is touching the power lines properly.
- Why It is Yellow: It is yellow so it is easy to see at night. This helps track maintenance workers quickly spot that "Doctor Yellow is coming!"
A Lucky Train You Rarely See
There is no public timetable for when Doctor Yellow runs. It only runs about once every 10 days, so you are super lucky if you get to see one! That is why people say "you will be happy if you see it."
How to Color Doctor Yellow
How to Choose Colors
When you color Doctor Yellow, make bright yellow the star of your picture!
- Body Color: The most important color is bright yellow. If you add a little orange for shadows, it will look even more like the real thing.
- Blue Stripe: Color the line below the windows with dark blue. This stripe really makes Doctor Yellow look just right.
- Lights: Try using bright yellow or white for the front lights, and red for the back lights.
- On the Roof: Roofs can get a little dirty, so using gray or silver makes it look cool and real.
Tips to Make It Look Cool
Let's show the speed and shine of this bullet train!
- Sparkling Shine: Leave the edges of the train body white, or use a white colored pencil to draw light lines. It will look like the train is shiny and reflecting light.
- Speedy Feel: Draw lots of lines going sideways in the background. It will look like Doctor Yellow is zooming past the station at top speed.
Try Creative Backgrounds
Imagine and draw Doctor Yellow on tracks near Mount Fuji, or crossing a big steel bridge. It is also fun to add people on the station platform watching in surprise!
Hints for Fun Coloring!
What if Doctor Yellow were a different color? It is fun to think about that while you color. Try making your very own special check-up train, like "Doctor Blue" or "Doctor Red"!
Fun Facts About Doctor Yellow
The Reason Why There Are Few Windows
Ordinary passenger Shinkansen have lots of windows, but Doctor Yellow has very few windows. This is because it carries precision machines inside instead of passengers. If too much light comes in from the outside, it makes it hard to see the screens. So, it has fewer windows and more walls to create plenty of space for setting up machines.
Shining "Searchlights" While Running
On the roof of Doctor Yellow, there are powerful searchlights to shine on the overhead wires. Even during the day, it turns on the lights and uses high-speed cameras to take many photos every second to check for wear and scratches on the wires.
