History of Nambu Line

Nambu Line started in 1927 as a private railway called "Nambu Railway." At first, carrying gravel from the Tama River and limestone from Okutama was a very important job, not just carrying people. After that, it joined the Japanese National Railways, and now everyone loves it as a JR East line.

Types of Trains Running

Many cool Nambu Line trains run every day. Let's look at what makes each one special!

• E233-8000 Series: This is the star of Nambu Line today. It features three-colored lines of yellow, orange, and brown. On the side of the train, there is a special logo designed to look like the towns along Nambu Line.
• E233-8500 Series: This train used to run on the Ome Line and Itsukaichi Line, and was remade for Nambu Line. There is only one train set, so you are super lucky if you spot it!
• E127 Series: This is the new face of the Nambu Branch Line that joined in 2023. It came all the way from Niigata Prefecture and has green and yellow lines. It has 2 cars and runs peacefully through the city.
• 205 Series: This train worked hard on the Nambu Branch Line for a long time. It passed the baton to the E127 Series, so you hardly see it anymore, but it was a great star that supported the history of the branch line.

Secrets of the Nambu Line Colors

The three colors used on Nambu Line trains are said to each have a special meaning. Yellow stands for bright light, orange stands for busy towns, and brown stands for the long history of the Nambu Line. Combining these three colors creates the energetic image of the Nambu Line!

Here is some advice to help you color the Nambu Line to look just like the real thing!

• Carefully color the three line stripes!: The most important part is the yellow, orange, and brown stripes on the train body. Try coloring each line carefully so the colors do not mix together. The order is yellow at the top, orange in the middle, and brown at the bottom.
• The silver train body: The body of the train is made of a metal called "stainless steel," so coloring it with light gray or silver will make it look real. The trick is to lay your colored pencil flat and color gently.
• The roof and underbody: If you color the air conditioners on the roof and the machinery under the train body with a dark gray, your whole picture will look sharp and cool.
• The destination display: If you color the sign box on the front of the train black and write words like "Tachikawa" or "Kawasaki" with a white pen, it will look just like an electric sign!

The Nambu Line runs across big iron bridges over the Tama River, and passes between tall buildings. Nambu Line has stations that play special music related to that town. For example, Shukugawara Station plays songs from "Doraemon" because it is close to the Fujiko F Fujio Museum. A Secret Spot in the Big City: "Nambu Branch Line"

The "Nambu Branch Line" splits off from Shitte Station and goes to Hama-Kawasaki Station. It is a short line that connects just 5 stations. Even though it is in the city, cute little trains with only 2 cars run chugging along. It is a special section where you can feel like you are on a "local countryside train in the big city." You can see quiet unstaffed stations that feel nostalgic, and pass by big freight trains that are totally different from the main line!
