About Narita Express

The Gateway to Air Travel! Narita Express

The Narita Express is a limited express train that connects large cities like Tokyo and Yokohama to Narita International Airport, where airplanes gather from all over the world. Its English name, Narita Express, is shortened to the friendly nickname "N’EX." It zooms along fast, carrying people who are about to board airplanes and visitors who came to play in Japan.

Past and Present Models

There are two cool types of Narita Express trains that have run so far.

  • First Generation (253 Series): This is the first Narita Express that came out in 1991. Painted in three colors—red, white, and gray—it had a stylish design just like a train in Europe. It no longer runs as a Narita Express, but some train cars are still active as the Nagano Electric Railway "Snow Monkey."
  • Second Generation (E259 Series): This is the current Narita Express that came out in 2009. While keeping the colors of the first model, its face got an even sharper and cooler look! The high driver's seat lets you see far ahead. Starting around 2023, the design was updated. Now, there are even more cars with an even more futuristic look that use silver as the base color, called the "E259 Series (New Design)."

Differences Between the New and Old Paint Schemes

They are the same shape of train, but changing the colors totally changes how they feel!

  • Old Paint Scheme (Original Design): This is the design from when it first debuted. The front face of the train is black, and it features a large "N’EX" logo mark. The three colors—red, white, and black—stand out clearly, giving it a strong image.
  • New Paint Scheme (Renewed Design): This new design came out in 2023. The front face turned into shiny silver, making it even more futuristic and stylish. The logo mark on the side is new, too!

Cool Things About the Narita Express

For people going on trips, it has many special features that normal trains do not have.

  • Large Luggage Spaces: You bring big suitcases when you go on a trip abroad, right? So, there is space near the seats to put large luggage, and you can even lock it up.
  • Quiet and Smooth: To help tired travelers rest easily, it has a special device that reduces shaking. That makes it super quiet and comfortable to ride!
  • High Driver's Seat: The driver's seat is in a high place so the driver can see far ahead. This is called a "high driver's cab."

How to Color Narita Express

How to Choose Your Colors: Tips for Each Design

Now is your time to shine! Choose your colors based on whether you want to color the "Old Look" or the "New Look."

[What They Have in Common]

  • Train Body: The main color is a bright, clean white.
  • Red Roof Top: Color the area from the roof down to the top edges in a bright red.
  • Around the Windows: Color the area around the window glass in black, making a long stripe from side to side.

[When Coloring the Old Look (Original)]

  • Front Face: Color the square area in black from below the driver window down to the front door in the middle. Making this black gives the train a sharp, cool face.
  • Logo Mark: Look for the "N’EX" letters on the side and front of the train, and color them in to make them look awesome.

[When Coloring the New Look (Renewed)]

  • Front Face: Color around the driver window and front door in silver or light gray. The most important tip is to use silver instead of black!
  • New Logo: You will find a new mark that says "SERIES E259" on the side of the train. Try using silver or gray here, too.

Make It Look Fast on Its Way to the Airport

Narita Express always looks like it is zooming straight toward the airport.

  • Speed Lines: Draw straight side-to-side lines in the background. It will look like the train is racing through the wind!
  • Sky and Airplane: Try adding a blue sky and a flying airplane in the background. It brings out the exciting feeling of going on a trip!
  • City Buildings: It is also super cool to draw tall Tokyo buildings to show the train zooming through the city.

Fun Facts About Narita Express

"Coupling" and "Uncoupling" at Tokyo Station

The coolest part of the Narita Express is the "coupling" and "uncoupling" at Tokyo Station! The long 12-car train from Narita Airport splits into two 6-car trains at Tokyo Station (uncoupling). After they split, one goes toward Shinjuku and the other goes toward Yokohama and Ofuna. They head off to different places! When going to the airport, trains coming from different places join together with a snap at Tokyo Station! (coupling) They become a long 12-car train and head to the airport.

What is the floor pattern?

If you look closely at the floor inside the train, you can see a square pattern. This design uses traditional Japanese "Ichimatsu checkered patterns." Maybe it is a way to say "Welcome to Japan!" to visitors from other countries.
