The Shinkansen N700 Series is a super popular train that lots of people use in Japan. It works hard on the Tokaido Shinkansen, Sanyo Shinkansen, and Kyushu Shinkansen lines as the "Nozomi," "Hikari," "Kodama," "Mizuho," "Sakura," and "Tsubame." You might have ridden one when you went on a trip or visited your grandparents!

When did the Shinkansen N700 Series debut?

The very first Shinkansen N700 Series made its debut in 2007. Since then, it has kept getting better! The "N700A" came out with even better power, and the newest type, the "N700S," has joined too.

What makes it so special?

The Shinkansen N700 Series is full of amazing tech to make it fast, safe, and super comfortable to ride.

• Aero Double Wing: The front of the train looks like a bird spreading its wings. This special shape lowers the loud booming sound when it enters a tunnel. It also cuts down air resistance so it can run really fast!
• Body Tilting System: When it goes around a curve, the train can tilt just a tiny bit inward. This lets it run smoothly through curves without slowing down much. It makes the ride feel great too!
• A Comfortable Ride: On some trains like the N700S, every single seat has a power outlet, not just the window seats! Plus, it runs very quietly, so you can enjoy talking or looking at the view.

Are there different types of the Shinkansen N700 Series?

There are a few different types of the Shinkansen N700 Series. They look similar, but you can tell them apart by their logo marks and light shapes!

• Shinkansen N700 Series: This is the very first train that came out.
• N700A: The "A" stands for "Advanced." It has better brakes and other upgraded parts. Look for the big "A" logo mark on the side of the train!
• N700S: The "S" stands for "Supreme." The N700S gives an even smoother ride and can stop super fast if an earthquake happens. It can even run a little bit on its own power during a blackout! It has bigger lights and a cool gold logo mark. The blue line on the front looks a bit different too.

Where does it run?

The Shinkansen N700 Series works hard on the Tokaido Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Shin-Osaka Station, the Sanyo Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka Station to Hakata Station, and the Kyushu Shinkansen from Hakata Station to Kagoshima-Chuo Station. It connects many important places all across Japan!

How to Choose Your Colors

The Shinkansen N700 Series looks so cool with its simple white design! Here are some tips on choosing colors to make your picture look great.

• Body color: The key to the body is making it look pure white and shiny. If you gently add a tiny bit of light gray or light blue where the shadows fall, it will look 3D!
• Blue stripes: The stripes on the side of the train are the Shinkansen N700 Series's trademark! Try to color them nice and straight with a slightly dark blue. They are thin lines, so take your time and stay inside the lines.
• Windows: If you color the windows gray or black, it makes it look like you cannot see inside. You can also mix in a little light blue to make them look like they are reflecting the sky!
• Headlights: If you color the lights above the driver's seat with yellow or orange, they will look like they are shining brightly!
• Roof: Try coloring the roof gray to show a little bit of dust and dirt.

• When using colored pencils: Color long sideways lines along the blue stripe under the windows. This makes it look like it is zooming by!

How to Make It Look 3D

The bullet train has a nice rounded shape. If you think about "light" and "shadows" while you color, it will look even more real!

• Where the light hits: Leave the top of the train and the round tip of the nose white, or erase a little color with an eraser. It will look like bright light is shining on it!
• Where the shadows fall: Color the bottom of the train and around the wheels with a slightly darker gray. This creates shadows and makes it pop out in 3D!
